The assembly lines that made B-17 bombers changed Seattle’s economic fortunes and racial makeup. Boeing’s production plant also produced pollution that would linger for decades. In the 1940s, though, that was of little concern compared to the country’s unifying goal: doing whatever it would take to win World War II.
